The Value of Intimate Weddings

Wedding at the Vow Exchange | Ben+Maria

I believe that Ben had been in love with Maria from the first moment they met. As she came down the aisle, during their intimate wedding, not only did his heart leap, a peace fell over everyone in the room. The moment of anticipation was finally here. And the family, this couple holds so dear, flew far and wide to celebrate with them.

There is something beautiful about intimate weddings. It seems like they’re peaceful and calm, never any storms, and life for a moment slows down.  It genuinely feels like the world stops and takes notice of a grand event.

Love filled the room. Each vow was eloquently spoken, as everyone listened in support of their declaration. As each wedding tradition unfolded Ben and Maria became husband and wife. Tears streamed down Maria’s face when she embraced her father after the ceremony, he held her tight and let her cry. Soon tears of joy filled the room as everyone took the time to congratulate the lovely couple.

The Seconds that Make Wedding Photography Count

Kansas City Wedding Photography

Wedding Photography

A few favorite  wedding moments captured by Photos Edge

Through the years there are thousands upon thousands of photos we have taken.   Each one striving for the perfect wedding photograph.  For us one of the best ways to capture a wedding is to realize the importance of what is going on.  This isn’t just a job, this isn’t just another moment.  On a wedding day there are the standard photographs that all decent wedding photographers should already know to capture.  Among some of the most standard moments are: a couple’s first kiss, first dance, walking down the isle, throwing of the bouquet or garter, bride getting ready, just to name a few.  However I am not known for being standard.  I don’t want my couples just getting the minimum. My amazing wedding couples deserve more than that.  Those events are not what I am looking for, I look for what happens before, during, and after those moments.  The seconds filled with pure joy, utter anticipation, honest emotion, and the best reactions that make for an outstanding wedding. Today I am going to share a few of my favorite emotional wedding moments.  These are the important seconds that fly by but will keep everyone talking about your wedding for years to come.

It’s subtle but very beautiful.  This isn’t a normal angle from a wedding but when I saw it, I quietly with ninja stealth hid behind some pillars and captured the moment.  The priest is a good college friend of the groom’s, so getting wonderful artistic photos of he and them during the ceremony was a must for this couple.  This wedding ceremony was at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the church with the gold dome.

Love this shot.  Grandpa is carrying the flower girl, who happens to be the couple’s daughter. All hands on deck.  Sometimes it takes an army to get a bride put back together after the wedding portraits are over.  On this day the wind took it’s toll on all of us, but the photos were amazing and everyone had a great time.  I will see that wind and raise you perfect photos. These gals worked fast, less than 10 minutes of bustling, perfecting hair and make-up, and we were off to the dance floor. Wedding Reception at The Westin Crown Center.

Charish and Antwon: A Harrah’s Wedding

Harrah's Casino wedding

A Harrah’s Casino Wedding

fun Las Vegas style wedding

Bold, vibrant, unique, different, and really really flippin’ cool, wedding at Harrah’s Casino.  That is how I would describe Charish and Antwon’s wedding.  I know Charish set out to have a wedding that was different than anything she had seen, from the ring bearer carrying the wedding rings in a suitcase like a secret service agent to Charish’s sexy dramatic dress. The beautiful center pieces hand made my the bride’s mother brought together a peacock theme. The cake was one of a kind with decorative accents and a complimenting groom’s cake that was inspired by Patron, the groom’s favorite drink. This wedding really was one of a kind.  The bridesmaid’s dresses reminded me of the perfect Vegas cocktail dress; short sexy black with a touch of sequins, rocked out with killer teal shoes.

Antwon was blown away when he first saw Charish. At about 10 years of age Antwon knocked on a door and asked a little girl’s mom if she could come out to play.  Charish’s mom smiled and told him not today, closing the door.  A few years later while hanging out with friends, Antwon told his buddies, “I am going to marry her someday.”  He pointed to Charish.  This year he finally got his wish and married the little girl that stole his heart years ago.

Will and Allie’s Wedding at St. Michael the Archangel

Wedding at St. Michael the Archangel

Will and Allie’s Wedding at St. Michael the Archangel

A creative look to a wedding photographer

I love being a wedding photographer. Relaxed and simply enjoying what I am doing, looking for the right angles with each moment. There is joy in telling someone story in an artistic way.  Something unique to them. Each moment is special, a piece of time we can never get back. Thank you for trusting me with your beginnings. As a wedding photographer I do not take it lightly.

Will and Allie had an amazing wedding. With a packed timeline, however the day didn’t seem rushed.  Will and Allie were going to be married, to them, that was all that mattered.  It’s funny but when a bride and groom enjoy the day, “no matter what happens”, nothing bad ever happens. The day runs smooth, perfect. Let it all go, we will catch you!

Everyone had a great time, I am thankful that I was able to capture not only their day but artistic images throughout. Photographs that could be displayed in a gallery.  Here are my favorite artistic photographs from this Kansas City wedding.

Kansas City Wedding at The Downtown Library

Kansas City Wedding Photography by Photos Edge

Words mean a lot.  What flows from the author’s imagination onto the page and into our lives, changes us. For the avid reader books are an adventure, a heartache, a journey.  Jeannine’s favorite place is the library, a room filled with words that comfort the soul.

Each guest enjoyed the wonderland of literature as Chris and Jeannine celebrated their wedding at the downtown Kansas City Library.  Every detail was a piece of the puzzle taking the guests on a literary journey; a library oasis beginning with the invitations, beautifully wrapped and unveiling the couple’s style, creativity, and love.

On the wedding day, books and pages of books could be found everywhere.  The chapter Chris loved best out of his favorite book found itself carefully folded into roses for his boutonniere.  The pages were beautiful compliments to Jeannine’s green and purple bouquet.  Each table held an arrangement of flowers, a candle, a stack of vintage books, and clippings in the shape of rose petals from the couple’s favorite books. Guests signed a library card instead of a traditional signature guest book. The guests were to write their name and a book they would recommend the couple to read.  Everyone had a great time gathering together and discussing their book of choice for the couple over wine.   But what pushed it over the top was the couple’s favorite quotes became party favors as book marks for each guest with a cute logo Chris and Jeannine had designed for their wedding stamped on the back.

It was a perfect day with great friends in wonderful places.  There are so many things that make this wedding unique.  I know that I spent a lot of time talking about the details, but we had a blast shopping in the River Market where Chris and Jeannine picked up one of their favorite spices.  The groomsmen juggled fruit.  And we all stood under the clock in Union Station where Jeannine’s family has some personal crazy stories to share. This day was a blast and I hope that you can see how wonderful this couple truly is through these photos.  Enjoy!

Bold and Colorful Engagement Session

Chris and Jeannine’s Urban Engagement Session

Bold and Colorful Kansas City Engagement by Photos Edge

The session was wonderful, and as my car broke down after the great session my heart sank.  There we were, all four of us on the 12th street bridge at 4:30pm anticipating rush hour to hit.  Marco and I for the first time had car trouble.  We made a few phone calls to get help but we also had to push back the photo shoot that followed Chris and Jeannine’s.  I was a nervous reck.  I felt like my whole life and all of my problems were unfolding in front of my clients.  And here I am admitting to it and sharing it on the web, it’s like showing my dirty laundry to the world.  I am not perfect.  Even though I truly wish that I was.

I was a ballerina for several years and a competitive gymnast even longer.  In fact one time the olympics seemed possible. Why I am sharing this? If you haven’t guessed already, I strive to be the best that I can be. So when my car broke down, while pushing back tears as another couple expressed how disappointed they were in me because I couldn’t make it to their location fast enough, I had Chris and Jeannine sitting in their car making sure that I was ok. They waited with us until we got something figured out and were safe.  Their understanding and compassion made me fall head over heals for them.  They were wonderful.  They are the reason I love my job.  Even in my toughest spot when it was an inconvenience for them, they stayed and helped with no judgement.  Lets face it, we all run into problems.  For me, this was huge.  I am about to publish their wedding today.  And I am happy to say that we gifted  10 additional pages to their album because they are that awesome.  Thank you Chris and Jeannine.  You will forever have a place in our hearts.  Enjoy the beautiful session!

Beautiful Town Square Wedding in Paola KS

Matthew and LeeAnn’s Beautiful Town Square Wedding

Wedding in the stunning town of Paola Ks by Photos Edge

He stood outside the door where she was getting ready, waiting patiently while trying to hold back tears.  He caught one small tear that glided over his cheek.  When I said, “She said, ‘I need my daddy, no really I need him.”  He smiled a little and pointed into where she was getting ready.  In a few minutes he would walk LeeAnn down the isle but not before giving her a lovely gift, a custom neckless.

They stepped out into the room at Town Square in Paola Ks, and with every step her groom waited with anticipation.  Matthew, who doesn’t cry, bit his lip as he held back tears.  LeeAnn was beautiful, but more than her being stunning, Matthew knew that this was the moment she would become his wife. With each passing event the two cherished their day.  From a fun release following the ceremony to having a blast creating portraits with their closest friends.

The reception was filled with dancing and games.  Instead of a dollar dance the couple decided to have a competition.  Here’s how it worked:  When you walked in the door there were 2 glass jars, one for the bride and one for the groom.  Whoever ended up with the most money at the end of the night won.  Winner and their bridal party members got to pie the other members in the face. Late in the evening a loving groom unloaded a bunch of money into the bride’s glass so that she would be taken care of.  The pieing was a blast and everyone had a great time.  The night ended with dancing and the lights went up in Town Square while a few couples were still swaying to the last bit of music.  That is what I call a great night!  Enjoy these Kansas Wedding Photographs!

Beautiful Circle S Ranch Wedding by Photos Edge

Circle S Ranch Wedding

Adam & Catherine’s Country Wedding at Circle S Ranch

by Kansas Wedding Photographers Photos Edge

She smiled at me lightly and sweetly said Hi.  I smiled big showing more teeth than normal, happy to see my beautiful bride.  My smile shifted as she looked at me with tears swelling in her eyes, she stopped them before they ruined her make-up, but we both knew this day was going to be special and hard.  My smile softened to a peaceful calm understanding and my heart hurt for Catherine.   She continued getting her make-up done while I began to photograph her details.  Each item was perfect for this country bling bride.  I would check on her and take a few more photos of her getting ready while Marco prepped the next detail for me.  Soon Catherine would be ready to put her dress on.  When that moment came her dad carried the dress downstairs to his daughter, helping her every step of the way.  Even though Catherine’s mom had recently passed away, her presence was there.  As Catherine’s dad helped button up her dress, while holding back tears, he made sure that her parents were there for her.   Watching that moment I understood fully where Catherine got her strength and unwavering love.   The moment wasn’t just the two of them; it was filled with wonderful friends making sure that this day, above all others, was fun.  Even if it rained.

Adam patiently waited for his stunning bride to come down the isle.  The barn was so perfect no one would have known that this wedding was originally planned to be outside.  I personally believe it was always meant to be inside the barn at the Circle S Ranch, filled with their closest, most loving friends and family.  The barn doors opened, clouds parted, and rays of sun gleamed  on Catherine as she walked down the isle toward her best friend.
