Personal Portrait Photography | Divya

Photography has always been something personal to me, especially as I put my heart in the click of every shutter. Something that I have learned over the years is the importance photos have on our lives. How images today speak a thousand words, and at times it feels like we are talking 90 miles a min, especially on Instagram. It has become more apparent that we have to put ourselves out there visually with personal portrait photography. To show our families that we are ok, to get that job we’ve always wanted, to just show the world “I am happy and doing really well”.

Over the past 5 years I have had the privilege to expand our photography business into something special. We provide portraits to couples, not just people getting engaged but couples of all ages and walks of life. I have also expanded into personal portrait photography, taking commercial / senior portrait style portraits for the individual. These photos can be done at anytime, you don’t have to be graduating to get amazing images. There should be no limits on artistic portraits.

Here is a recent personal portrait session. I think Divya is stunning. She was great to work with and is simply beautiful.  Thank you for choosing me to take your photos. I hope that you love them.

The Struggle is Real | Wedding blog

Wedding Photography Blogging

Wedding blog | Photos Edge

The struggle is real! What do I type? What can I say? Are there truly enough words to describe how beautiful something is? And do I use the word beautiful to much? Where do I start with this wedding blog post?

A few years back the words seemed to flow. Then it happened, people began to take notice and I froze. The pressure was on and I didn’t feel like what I had to say was enough. I pulled away from blogging. And this year starting now I am putting myself back out there.

When I photograph I don’t take a picture with my mind. I take a picture with my heart and my soul. I am open. I cry behind the camera, smile with my couple’s and their families in the joyous moments. I feel everything. I love it all! The tension between a couple when they see each other for the first time, that moment when the groom wants to get the bride’s hand from her dad but it just isn’t quite time yet, the smiles at the reception when everyone cuts loose and jams out to their favorite songs, or when a mom helps her daughter into the most important gown she will ever wear.  How can I describe it and give it justice? What can I say, when sometimes I am speechless?

Each wedding is like a novel to me, the story unfolding one emotion at a time. And though many weddings have similar traditions depending on the culture, each wedding is different. The moments between the events are silent pieces of gold waiting to be discovered. I search out those moments. Would you believe that I even dream of couple’s weddings? I do, days before the event my mind begins to create. It’s like my subconscious is ahead of the game, and I am totally invested, dreams and all.

So I will post from the heart, from my experiences, lots of images, one paragraph at a time. I will share with you a story greater than that of fairytales. This is your life, it is Magnificent!

Thank you for choosing me to be your artist.   ~E

A Sweet Kansas City Engagement Session

From the moment Mike and Jillian stepped out of their car laughing and smiling with each other, I knew this engagement session would be anything but boring.  My excitement grew when I saw that the color of Jillian’s dress actually matched the location I had picked out for this fun loving couple!  As we began the session one thing became extremely apparent about Jillian and Mike: they are each other’s favorite person in this world.  When they look at each other their smiles get bigger, and when they touch the atmosphere around them seems to get brighter.  Soon they even had me smiling behind the camera.

Jillian and Mike, I am looking forward to capturing more moments of fun and affection during your Kansas City wedding, and to see your smiles light the room as you become man and wife. For now, enjoy these fun engagement photos, I certainly enjoyed creating them!!

Getting ready at the Ambassador Hotel

I haven’t quite figured out what my favorite part of Julie and Jared’s wedding is! I know, I have had some time to think about it. But it was a great day! So much happened; from jumping on the bed to a gorgeous artistic getting ready image that could find itself in Vanity Fair. Even Carrie Bradshaw would LOVE this wedding. Now you understand my dilemma, and this is just a sneak peek and I only mentioned getting ready. Oh, there is so much to this wedding! LOVE all the way.

The Ambassador Hotel was calm yet busy as guests were arriving along with all of the wedding vendors. One of my favorite wedding vendors is Ashley Hotka at Good Earth Floral, she was so excited that I was photographing the wedding, it made my morning. I had just began to photograph details when the groom arrived with the bride’s must have shoes! Right there! that moment! Jared is a keeper! Any man that will go get shoes is completely awesome!

Julie stole my heart as she embraced her wedding day with full joy! I hope that you can see the beauty and fun that this couple had in this Photos Edge Kansas City Wedding Photographers sneak peek. Enjoy!

I have to send a thank you to Nellie with Events by Nellie, she helped navigate this incredible wedding.

Pakistani Wedding

Pakistani Wedding at Longview Mansion

South Asian Wedding Photography by Photos Edge

As we walked through the gardens at Longview Mansion the sun shined bright, matching the intensity of the colors in Nazia and Zain’s wedding attire. This Pakistani wedding was undoubtedly the most colorful wedding we had ever seen at the historic mansion.   The bride’s gown shimmered as the hand embroidered beads danced above a sea of soft green. The custom gown and purse were designed by the groom’s mother, and Nazia’s big smile let us know that she was enchanted by her mother in law’s gift. The groom wore a tailored pin striped suit in cobalt blue, with a pink tie and handkerchief for a pop of color. Though she was in traditional Pakistani attire, and he was in a modern suit, the colors played off each other and fit together perfectly.

The guests were on their way and we needed portraits of the bride and groom, so we wandered over to the abandoned pergola that sits on the banks of old Longview lake. Zain and Nazia looked into each other’s eyes and for a moment this colorful romance revealed the true love their marriage was built upon. Erin began to pose the bride next to a vine covered pillar, and complemented the beautiful mehndi that covered her hands. Nazia beamed and promptly showed us a secret: she put her palms next to each other, and a heart was formed with the initials N and Z contained inside! This international wedding celebration was full of all the right stuff: warm smiles, joyful laughter, and enough love to last for ages.

Thank you Nazia and Zain, for letting us in on your beautiful wedding.

Please enjoy the stunning portraits!

Kansas City Wedding Photography at the Firestone Building

Giant smiles, a little laughter, and a few big tears filled the dressing rooms at the Firestone Building, for a stunning Kansas City Wedding. Both the bride and the groom had the same reaction. The moment they saw themselves the wedding became real.

In a few short hours Martin would become Geony’s husband. The two couldn’t have been more excited to marry one another. You could feel the tension rise at Country Club Christian Church, right before Geony walked down the isle. It seemed as thought the whole church held their breath in amazement, joy, and love for this couple. They chose to see each other for the first time walking down the isle. Martin smiled, Geony beamed, but the best part of them seeing each other during the ceremony was actually at the end. A big sigh, and exuberant joy was expressed as they were announced, “the two have been joined as one… You may kiss your bride”. That was the moment. Right there! Martin looked at Geony, the way all movies portray the perfect love story. For a split second, time stopped.

Thank you to Martin and Geony for letting us in and trusting us to capture not only the way your wedding looked, but also the passion and love that you have for each other. We hope you enjoy your wedding photography for years to come.

She held my coffee gently as I took a photo that was destined for Pinterest. A perfect Mocha and a lovely heart shaped design carefully crafted. Moments later Marco brought two cups of coffee and cream for Kelsey and Brian to have. I stood there outside of Quay coffee in the River Market of Kansas City, with camera in hand photographing them in between delicious sips. We chatted about artists, college, costume shops, and our favorite café which will always be 3 fools. Brian, our soon be groom, was a founding member and one of the 3 fools. Needless to say Brian is an excellent chef.

This Kansas City Engagement session started out chill and fun. I wanted Kelsey and Brian, who had come down from Minneapolis, to be themselves. We relaxed with a more lifestyle engagement session, focusing on genuine smiles and creating great moments. Marco and I were happy to include their pup.

As we were wrapping up our coffee photo shoot, we giggled at how hipster this all was. I chose my favorite coffee shop and they happened to match the sailor theme. It was perfect without anyone trying too hard. The truth is, this couple was just being themselves. These are the people that hipsters try to become. Years from now Kelsey and Brian will still be artistic and cool and chill in all the right ways.

Their success blows me away. I love watching artist succeed! Kelsey, who is designing her own wedding gown, has always left me in awe with her creations. She is a fantastic designer and I can’t wait for their wedding this weekend!

Congratulations! Marco and I are excited!!!

Wedding Photography Sneak Peek | Photos Edge

Sarah and Travis had a beautiful Mildale Farm Wedding. I don’t have a favorite part of the day just yet, there were too many for me to choose. But one memory, and an amazing must have shot for Sarah’s wedding, was a photo near the garden showing off the back of her stunning lace wedding gown. Perfectly in place, Sarah held her pose for me while I fixed her dress. I wanted to make sure to show off all of the lace in her gown before taking the photo. I love this dress on Sarah, it’s unique and something I had never photographed before. I think together we created a one of a kind wedding photograph, that she will cherish for years to come.

I couldn’t resist the cool mugs that Travis had given his groomsmen as a wedding gift. Each groom partied the night away with their own custom mug. It was fun hearing all the stories as the bridesmaids got ready, and the jokes the groomsmen told.  Before Sarah and Travis walked down the isle we took these wonderful group shots. I never mind it when the bride and groom don’t want to see each other until they walk down the isle. At times it can be very romantic. Each group was photographed separately. The guys first and then the girls, building up the excitement of the ceremony. I think the side of the barn made for a great backdrop, and it was steps away from the ceremony.

Sarah’s wedding bouquet, filled with sunflowers, shined light on how happy this day was, everyone was smiling, even in the heat. There are so many photos to share, it was hard to pick out just a few from this wedding. I can’t wait for you to see them all. Until next week…here is a lovely wedding photography sneak peek. Enjoy Sarah and Travis’s Mildale Farm Wedding!

Maranda’s Senior Portraits

It didn’t take me long to pick the perfect location for Maranda after seeing her cute outfits and understanding her style. Not only was she smart and beautiful, she was a blast to photograph! We did a combination of in studio portraits, roof top portraits, and then we hit the town for some urban vines and rusted doors. I was excited to photograph my new chair; I thought that the peach and green made such a fantastic color combination with Maranda’s hair. She is absolutely stunning in her senior portraits. And she really embraced our roof top access, showing off the Kansas City Skyline in her senior pictures.

I was so excited when she and her mom came in to view her session. The photos played across our screen and Maranda’s smile got bigger and bigger. It was extremely hard to choose favorites; there were so many great photos.

Maranda, thank you for being sweet and wonderful to work with, I enjoyed all the time we spent capturing these wonderful images and creating art just for you.

Romantic Portraits in Kansas City

They made me laugh, they made me laugh so hard. I couldn’t stop smiling from behind my camera, the jokes, the flirting, then the subtle embrace and his lips fell softly on her cheek. The sun was shining through the few clouds that were left from the morning sprinkles, and then the rain would start to fall again. A few drops hit Jeff’s shirt and while I was still laughing, Stacia beamed! What else could she do, she was in love with a man who adored her every breath. Somewhere in between the shifting clouds and the laughter, Marco and I watched a love unfold. Genuine smiles, true hugs, and long kisses; we were capturing real intimacy. Thank you Jeff and Stacia for opening yourselves up, trusting that we would capture your abundant love and true passion for each other.  Please enjoy these romantic portraits of a love that will last forever.

I wanted to give a huge shout out to Jeff and Stacia, our new found friends and fellow photographers.  Jeff happens to be the president of the Iowa PPA (Professional Photographers of America).  Marco and I are honored that they chose us to photograph their special day! Moira’s senior portraits with snow & the city

It was the very last snow fall of the season, which lasted longer than expected in Kansas City. Moira got out of the car and pulled out her red guitar for her Kansas City senior portrait session. I knew she played, but the joy of what I was about to photograph finally hit me.  Red guitar, black and grey dress fit for an orchestra performer, and the snow. Each item of clothing had sentimental value, gifts from family members and items Moira loved.  She was herself: joyful, innocent, kind, and creative. When I was growing up my grandmother called me a Unique, years later that same phrase was used in a Richard Gere movie, Autumn in New York, to describe Winona Ryder’s loving character. Today I am applying it to Moira, she is a Unique!

On the second session Moira brought her friend along, and while on the roof looking at the Kansas City Skyline, the two had quite the adventure, strutting their stuff.  We even have an inside joke “Russian Mafia” anyone?

Lets get “Back to the Future” and see these wonderfully creative senior portraits!

The Jackson’s Fun Urban Family Portraits

I couldn’t help but smile as they walked up to the red wall I had chosen for the first set of photos, the Jackson family looked confident…and fun!  They smiled back at me, and we soon began.  After having them hold hands and look straight at the camera, the kids’ eyes started glazing over and I knew it was time to shake things up, so I said with a smirk: “OK, now do something FUN!”  They immediately turned and made faces at each other! It was perfect.  When we moved over to the cream couch in front of a white brick wall, It was clear Debbie and Dan had been married for years because they fit together so naturally when they sat down.  My favorite shot of the whole session though, happened while Dan was holding Abby, and just before I had them turn to look at me she got this little grin on her face and decided to cover both of their mouths with her hand.  It caught Dan completely by surprise!

Enjoy!

Kansas City Wedding at Union Station

and Liberty Memorial

Kansas City Wedding Photographers | Photos Edge

She glanced out the window of the Westin hotel several times before finally letting herself relax and enjoy the view. For the most part Asona was ready to go. She had twirled in her wedding gown, laughed with her sister, and had every item perfectly in place. The flowers still in the box the florist had brought them in, matched the room.  It was a sea of purple, violet, and lilac with the boldness of green. Each girl started off the day wearing a violet robe and then individualized purple raw silk dresses. Oh, to be in that room again, Asona looking at her ceremony site from the large window above, each chair perfectly in place creating a circle around the altar. It was both unique and remarkable.

Each bridal party member got out of the trolley and walked down the isle. It wasn’t until Asona got off of the trolley with her mom and dad and began walking down the grassy isle that Marco’s smile really lit up. It didn’t matter that he had seen her hours before the ceremony. This was their day, and this was the moment she would become his wife.

The ceremony was customized for Marco and Asona; they taught a lesson of sorts, with each groomsman holding a flash card. The couple then shared with their dearest friends and family some of their secrets, as to why they love each other. All the while Union Station and the Kansas City Skyline created the perfect backdrop for this one of a kind Kansas City Wedding. Their ceremony was a true union between cultures and families. As prayers were said and blessings made, both families signed the marriage decree. The couple kissed, held hands, and happily jumped the broom. As they danced back down the isle the sun shined through the buildings, evening was here and it was time to celebrate.

Union Station echoed with joy and laughter. Compliments flooded the bride and groom as they ate dinner, on how amazing everything looked and how fun their ceremony was. Each table was adorned with purple flowers like the bridal bouquet, and the head table that ran down the middle of the room was covered in moss and purple blooms, like a romantic garden with gold accents. It resembled a modern fairytale, staged to perfection by the lovely Erika and her team at Eco Posh Events.

Whispers filled the crowded room and then fell to a halt as the couple danced and danced and danced. Everyone knew that Asona and Marco had taken dance lessons for years in Chicago before moving to Kansas City. But not very many of the guests had actually seen them in action.  It was a fun treat that started off celebrations from professional dancers, and speeches that brought the room to laughter. We ended the fourth of July weekend festivities with a sparkler send off. It had to be done! But as we were heading out, the lovely couple had one more request. Asona, while holding Marco’s hand said, “My brother has this idea…” I smiled and said, “I can do anything you want.” She happily ran and got her brother who shared with me the goal of this final photo. He and his other cousins, 3 of them to be exact, wanted to run around Asona and Marco with sparklers. I chimed in and said I have the perfect spot. Together at midnight on the lawn of the Liberty Memorial, Asona and Marco ended their wedding day and began a beautiful new journey.

Reminds me of Grace Kelly and Fred Astaire, I think this image really captures the way their dancing felt.

Performance was choreographed by Tyrone Aiken, Executive  Director of the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey.  This was Tyrone’s wedding present to Asona and Marco.

Urban Studio Engagement Session

Taking me by surprise, Marco dipped Asona in our studio for a “fun shot”, I was thrown off because my Marco (Marco Polo) and I had taught ballroom dancing many years ago and only the pros dip like Asona and her loving man Marco. Yep 2 Marco’s here! Another wonderful thing Asona and I have in common. Our love for flurly (yes a made up word for dress that spin) dresses, our love for dance, and to top it off the love of a man named Marco. Yes we were on the right track. The hour seemed to fly by and the images were sweet, heartfelt, and fun!

To get to know this lovely couple here is a snip it from them:

How We Met

We met in college, at WashU, near the beginning of  Marco’s senior year and Asona’s junior year.  On that special day that we’re both so thankful for, Asona and her friends went to a party at the Loop Lofts thrown by Marco’s friends and next door neighbors.

As it turned out, we had known a lot of the same people throughout most of our time at WashU, had somehow never gotten to know each other.  Asona really didn’t feel like going out that night, but boy is Marco happy that she did.
He saw his beautiful future co-exister from the across room, sitting on the couch with an open seat next to her, and went over to introduce himself.

The conversation flowed easily right from the start as they started finding out more about each other, and laughing and enjoying each other’s company.  The party got broken up by the police pretty early on, but they both remember being almost unaware of everything else going on around them, just sitting on that couch, focused on each other, before and after everyone else left.

By the end of the night they had discussed religion and politics, views on family and money – all of the things that you’re not supposed to talk about on a first date – with plenty of laughs, and smiles and heart-flutters mixed in.
Marco cooked dinner for her a few days later, they ran into each other several times in the next few days – some by chance, some not – and didn’t spend another day apart until Thanksgiving.

The rest is history. ~Asona & Marco

Check out this good looking young man. I can’t believe that Chase is a Senior this year! Time flies. I remember arriving to his house the evening after his first birthday party, in Manhattan Ks. I think I brought him bubbles and sidewalk chalk, not sure. But whatever it was he came down all smiles, was very polite with a sweet thank you and ran off to play. Chase is my second cousin and since our families are so close I often feel more like an aunt.

Thank you for taking the time with me to capture some awesome photos.
